Sims Named Assistant WR Coach

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne football program announced today the hiring of former McMurry University standout Hunter Sims as wide receivers coach.

“I am pleased to announce the hiring of Hunter Sims as wide receivers coach at HPU,” said Steve Fanara HPU head football coach. “I believe he will be a great addition to our staff and help us further develop our receivers to be one of the best groups in the conference.”

Hunter Sims recently worked as a graduate assistant wide receivers coach with Angelo State University. Sims also this past year helped coach defensive backs for the professional arena football team San Angelo Stampede of the IFL (Intense Football League). After his college playing career was over, he served as a student assistant McMurry University working with wide receivers and quarterbacks.

As a player, Sims was a three-year letterman and two-time Academic All-Conference selection for McMurry University at quarterback. He went on to play quarterback in the GFL (German Football League) for the Professional Schwabisch Hall Unicorns. He recently finished his professional career this last season with the San Angelo Stampede and Frisco Thunder of the IFL.

“He brings in experience as a player and coach from the ASC and knows what it takes to compete in this league. We are excited to get him on board,” Fanara added.

While in Germany playering professional football, he was also the head baseball coach of the Schwabisch Renegades Baseball team (Men's team 18 and up). Sims led them to the Landesliga Championship and was named Coach of the Year. Sims has worked football camps around the state and spent extensive time working with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes as a camp counselor.

Hunter is 25 years old and is a 2007 graduate of McMurry University with a degree in Education and a minor in History. He will start on the Howard Payne football staff on July 6th.
