Greetings,
Thank you for your interest in Howard Payne University Athletic Training. My name is Mike Terrill and I am Head Athletic Trainer at HPU. The Athletic Training Program at HPU offers an excellent opportunity for you to examine the profession of Athletic Training and attain the qualifications necessary to become a Texas state licensed Athletic Trainer.
HPU Athletic Training offers two basic paths for our athletic training students. First, the majority of athletic training jobs in the state of Texas are in the high schools. Our first path prepares you to graduate as a Licensed Athletic Trainer and attain your teaching certificate. Several of our recent graduates have found good paying jobs at high schools in the areas of Texas they wished to live. Second, several of our Athletic Training Students wish to go on and pursue advanced degrees in athletic training, physical therapy, and other medical fields. The second option allows you to graduate as a licensed athletic trainer and meeting all the requirements to get into the graduate school of your choice.
Howard Payne University offers many advantages as a university, and I hope you have had an opportunity to visit the campus and/or talk to one of our recruiters (If not let me know and I will arrange a visit for you). The Athletic Training program offers additional advantages: 1. Hands on experience, from day one you will be involved in the care and treatment of athletes with a team of highly trained professionals; 2. Learning, both in the class room and in the clinical setting, we stress learning over time; each class in athletic training builds on the last and all carry over to the clinical setting; 3. Fellowship, the athletic training students and professional staff are a close nit group of individuals working to achieve a common goal; 4. Last, stipend opportunities, as your experience in athletic training grows, the opportunity of larger stipends occur.
I hope I have been able to answer some of your questions about the Athletic Training Program at HPU. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me.
