Marion Carleton “Carl” Woodward, along with his younger brother Jess, were the first brothers inducted into the HPU Athletics Hall of Fame. Woodward scored a touchdown in the Yellow Jackets’ 13-7 upset of Texas A&M at Kyle Field in College Station in 1922. Woodward’s score marked the first time the Aggies had a touchdown scored on them at home in five years. Howard Payne went on to win the Texas Conference and A&M won the Southwest Conference. Woodward played halfback on offense, defensive back and was a punter. He also was on the track team, competing in hurdles, relays and long jump. He played guard on the Yellow Jacket basketball team and third base in baseball. Before coming to Howard Payne, Woodward graduated from Comanche High School and served in World War I in Europe. After graduating in 1924, he taught math and algebra and coached at Denison. He died in 1971 and was inducted posthumously.
