Jackets Fall To Wayland

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Michael Thompson led Howard Payne with 15 points in a 64-50 loss to Wayland Baptist University in the Yellow Jackets season opener.

The game remained close throughout the first half with both teams sharing the lead at some point. Wayland Baptist would hold a 23-22 advantage at the half as never team shot the ball well, HPU 34% and WBU 38%.

Both teams shot over 50% in the second half but it was a 14-1 run by Wayland to start the second that proved to be the difference in the game. The Jackets did not have a good night at the free-throw line as well going 3 of 10 as a team.

A three-point bucket by Michael Thompson with 15:50 left in the game would snap the scoring drought for the Jackets. Thompson finished the game with a team high 15 points on 6 of 9 shooting from the field. He was also 3 of 5 from behind the arc.

A Brandon Gould jumper with 10 minutes remaining cut the Wayland lead to eight, 44-36. That would be as close as the Jackets got as Wayland held on for the 64-50 win.

Gould also shot the ball well going 6 of 9 from the field to finish with 14 points. Christian Davis added a game high 11 rebounds along with nine points.

Wayland was led by Eric Milan and Travis Payton each with 16 points.

The Yellow Jackets will play next on Tuesday, November 20th  on the road in a non-conference game against East Texas Baptist at 7:00 pm.
