Lady Jackets Fall To Luther College

ATLANTA, GA – The Howard Payne University women's basketball team was upset by Luther College 78-74 on day one of Oglethorpe University tournament Thursday evening.

Despite forcing 20 Luther turnovers and committing only 13, it was Luther outrebounding HPU 56-41 that was the difference in the game.

Luther used a 10-0 run to gain a 12 point lead with 9:01 left in the first half. HPU would creep back to within five but Luther pushed it back to 12 with 24 seconds left in the half. A converted on a three-point play with nine second left in the half by HPU's Danyel Bradley made the score 43-34 Luther at the break.

The Lady Jackets chipped away at the Luther lead and two Kayla Scott free-throws tied the game at 55-55 with 12:25 left to play.

The game remained close throughout the rest of the half with Luther leading 76-72 with a minute remaining. A Bradley steal and layup brought the Lady Jackets to within two, 76-74 with 40 seconds left. Bradley finished the game with 13 points and three steals for HPU.

The Lady Jackets missed a couple of opportunities in the closing seconds to tie the game. Then two free-throws by Luther would secure the game 78-74.

Britani Gattis led the Lady Jackets with 16 points and three steals. Tresta Donahoo followed with 14 points. Dana Marrs added 12 points and four steals. Senae Dillard grabbed a team high 10 rebounds.

Taylor Johnson led Luther with a game high 30 points and 20 rebounds. Rachel Stenhaug and Nellie Nelson each added 12 points.

Howard Payne falls to 6-2 overall and Luther improves to 7-3. The Lady Jackets will play tomorrow night versus tournament host Oglethorpe at 4:00 pm central.
