CLINTON, MS – Five different Mississippi College players scored in double figures as the Choctaws beat Howard Payne 94-86 Monday night.
Howard Payne was led by Jr. G Kendrick Johnson's(Willowridge HS) 22 points, 15 of which came in the first half. Jr F Sean Wheeler(San Angelo-Lakeview HS) added 20 points and Sr. C Cliff McGuire(Haskel HS) finished with 18 and a game high ten rebounds.
MC's Winford knocked down 7-8 shots and was a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. Point guard Jonathan Collins added 14 points and a team high four assists. Guards Cedric Armstrong and Devin Jones each poured in 12 points while Orlando Lewis added ten points. Forward Lonnie Vasquez added seven points and a MC team high eight rebounds.
The MC never trailed in the game and led by as many as eleven with 2:20 remaining. HPU did cut into the lead and actually trailed by just three points with twenty seconds left, but MC knocked down 8-9 free throw attempts in the final two minutes to earn the win.
HPU will be back in action Thursday night at home(Brownwood Coliseum) verses Austin College.
