LONGVIEW, TX - The Jacket use great work in the paint to edge LeTourneau Thursday night, lead by Cliff McGuire's 10 points in OT. HPU made 36-of-68 shots and won the battle of the boards, 46-32.
HPU dominated the glass in the first half, grabbing 11 offensive rebounds. In the second half, LeTourneau managed to cut down on Howard Payne's offensive rebounds, but HPU clung to a small lead for much of the half. LeTourneau's Burnett scored on the lay-up while getting fouled and made the free throw to give LeTourneau a two point lead with 17 seconds left in the game. Howard Payne came down and worked a nice high-low play from Sr. Cliff McGuire(Haskell HS) to Jr. F Sean Wheeler(San Angelo-Lake View HS), for a lay-up to tie the game at 81 with eight seconds left.
In overtime, it was all Howard Payne as McGuire scored 10 of his 18 points in the final stanza.
Six different players scored in double figures for HPU with So. G Jamarcus Johnson(Beaver County CC) leading the team with 21 points and seven assists. McGuire posted a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. The other double digit scorers for HPU Sr. G Matt Zinser(Burnet HS) with 17, Jr. G Josh Weatherred(Clarendon JC) with 13, and Jr. G Kendrick Johnson(Willowridge HS) with 12.
LeTourneau's Evers scored a career high 34 points and pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.
HPU will be back in action Saturday at East Texas Baptist University.
