Jackets win nineth straight of the season

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Yellow Jackets used excellent free-throw shooting (92%) to escape with a win 74-65 over the Mountaineers of Schreiner Saturday in Kerrville. With the win and a loss by UMHB to McMurry, HPU now stands alone in 1st place in the ASC West.

After a tight first half that saw HPU gain a 40-39 lead at halftime, Schreiner came out attacking in the second half and took the lead.  Schreiner led 50-44 with under 15 minutes remaining but was only able to tally 15 points the rest of the way while HPU scored 30. 

HPU made its first 20 free throws in the game before missing two in the closing minutes. HPU out-rebounded Schreiner 42 to 27 in the game. The Yellow Jackets out-scored Schreiner 34 to 26 in the second half to take the win 74-65.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Jr. G Kendrick Johnson's(Willowridge HS) game high 23 points with 8 rebounds. He was also 10 out of 10 from the free-throw line. Sr. G Matt Zinser(Burnet HS) had 21 points with a game high 5 steals. Sr. C Cliff McGuire(Haskell HS) posted another double-double on the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Fr. F Tom Herman(Ft. Worth-SW Chr. HS) in his first start of his career had a career high 13 rebounds with 6 points.

Jonathan Young was Schreiner's top scorer with 20 points.  Lance Hrncir scored 10 points.  Joseph Davis led SU with 6 rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets play next on Thursday at Concordia University of Austin at 7:30 pm.
