Great shooting by HPU lifts them past UT-Dallas

BROWNWOOD, TX – The Jackets used red hot shooting to hand University of Texas at Dallas its 8th loss of the season 87-73 Thursday night in the Brownwood Coliseum.

Jr. F Sean Wheeler(San Angelo-Lake View HS) scored a career high 27 points and had 9 rebounds to lead the Jackets. Sr. C Cliff McGuire(Haskell HS) posted his 4th straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The score remained close through the first 3 minutes of the game before HPU gained a 6 point lead on a 3-pointer by Sr. G Matt Zinser(Burnet HS) with 14:50 left in the half. UTD came back within 1 (23-22) on a free-throw by Adam Bush with 8:19 to play in the first. HPU from that point went on a 23-6 run that lasted till halftime to go into the lockeroom up 46-28. The Jackets shot 58.1% in the first while holding UTD to 28.6% from the field.

HPU scored the first four points of the second half to extend their lead to 22. UTD fought back to within 17 on a 3-pointer by Jay Swafford with 15:53 left in the game. The Jacket then went on a 17-6 run that lasted 5 minutes to extend their lead to 28 and make the score 72-44 with 10:40 remaining. UTD was able to scratch back to within 14 at the closing buzzer.

The Yellow Jackets were lead by Sean Wheeler's 27 points and 9 rebounds. Jr. G Jamarcus Johnson(Beaver County CC) had 13, Cliff McGuire had 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Jr. G Kendrick Johnson(Willowridge HS) had 10.

UTD was lead by Martin Salinas's 17 points and Tyrone Hurt's 10 rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Thursday, January 7, 2006 at home verses the University of Texas at Tyler at 3:00pm.
