Jackets Drop Season Opener To Dallas Baptist

DALLAS, Texas - The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets shot only 38.7% from the floor as the Patriots of Dallas Baptist University won 83-64 at the Burg Center on Saturday night.

DBU forced 22 HPU turnovers converting those into 26 of their 83 points. The Jackets did shoot 78.6% from the free-throw line compared to DBU's 52.4%. HPU was out-rebounded 40-28 in the game.

The game remained close much throughout the first half. DBU then used their transition game to build a 7 point half-time lead, 33-26.

In the second, it was more of the DBU fastbreak game. The Patriots were able to maintain their lead and then extend it to 19 at the end of the game, 83-64 DBU.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Sr. guard Kendrick Johnson (Houston) with 17 points. Jr. guard Lee Scott played great off the bench scoring 11.

DBU center Manny Montano ran the floor very well scoring 16 points (most in transition) and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. Nick Michels also chipped in a game-high 21 points.

Howard Payne will be on the road Tuesday at Abilene Christian University. It is a 8:00 p.m. start.
