BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets committed 23 turnovers and were out-rebounded 49 to 33 in the 79-70 loss to the Tigers of East Texas Baptist Thursday night in the Brownwood Coliseum. HPU guard, Kendrick Johnson, passed 1000 points in his career in the game.
Kendrick Johnson (Houston) was only needing 17 points in this game to pass the 1000 mark in his career. He scored 20 with a team-high 8 rebounds.
The game in the first minutes remained close with ETBU able to hold a slight lead. HPU was able to take the lead on a layup by Tom Hermann with 16:15 in the first, 12-10 HPU.
ETBU retook the lead with strong play from Chris Isom, but a layup by HPU's Lee Scott with :44 seconds left in the first secured a 38-38 tie at the half.
In the second, the lead chanced several times in the first 13 minutes. HPU's last lead was at the 7:13 mark on a jumper by Kendrick Johnson, 62-60. ETBU retook the lead and held on for the 79-70 win.
HPU was led by Sean Wheeler's (San Angelo) game-high 23 points and 2 blocks. Kendrick Johnson had 20 and Lee Scott (Snyder) came off the bench to score 11.
ETBU's Chris Isom had 21 and a game-high 9 rebounds. Michael Shepard and Melvin Brewer both had 11.
HPU falls to 0-4, 0-2 in ASC, while ETBU improved to 1-6, 1-1 in the ASC.
HPU playes again on Saturday at home versus LeTourneau at 3:00 p.m.
