BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets shot 47.8% from the three point line but could not stop Wayland Baptist's Kendall Webb who scored 40 points in the 87-80 loss to Wayland Saturday in the Brownwood Coliseum.
The Yellow Jackets had four players score in double digits led by Kendrick Johnson's (Houston) season high 28 points.
At the start of the game, Wayland jumped out to a slight lead, but the Jackets were able to rally and gain a 39-33 halftime lead. HPU out shot Wayland 45.7% to 40.6% in the first half.
In the second, HPU held on to their lead till 10:08 to play when Wayland took the lead on a 3-point play, 55-53.
There were four ties over the next 3 minutes in the game. Wayland then built a lead of 9 and held on for the 87-80 win.
With Johnson's 28 points the Jackets also had Lee Scott (Snyder) off the bench with 19 points on 5 of 10 shooting from the 3-point line. Sean Wheeler (San Angelo) scored 16 and Tom Hermann (Fort Worth) chipped in 13 points.
Wayland was led by Kendell Webb's 40 points who was 6 of 11 from the 3-point line. Danny Storey also had 21 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets will play on the road this Saturday as they take on the University of Texas - Tyler; it will be a 3:00 p.m. start.
