BROWNWOOD, Texas - In game 4 of the 2006 ASC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament the Comets of the University of Texas-Dallas where eliminated by the Yellow Jackets of Howard Payne University winning 74-70 in the Brownwood Coliseum Friday night.
The Comets were hot early on from the 3-point line, but the Jackets kept the game close. It was 21-21 with 9:44 left in the first. Both teams traded leads till the Comets took a 4 point lead and carried that into the locker room, 35-31. UT-Dallas out-rebounded Howard Payne 21-15 in the first half.
The Comets started the second half on a 6-2 run, extending the score to 41-33. The Yellow Jackets back to within 3 with 13 minutes left to play, 43-46. UT-Dallas held on to their lead till HPU tied the game at 65-65 with 2:35 to play. HPU took the lead 67-65 on a lay-up by Sean Wheeler. With :12 seconds left UT-Dallas' McKee hit 2 free-throws to put the Comets up 70-69. Two seconds left HPU's Kendrick Johnson hit a 3-pointer to led the Jackets to their 74-70 victory.
For Howard Payne, Kendrick Johnson led all scorers with 23 points on 9 of 18 shooting. Matt Zinser had 19 and Sean Wheeler chipped in 14. The Jackets improve to 19-6 on the year.
