HPU Rolls Past TLU

SEGUIN, Texas – Howard Payne turned a three-point halftime lead into a 15-point runaway win by scoring 57 points in the second half of a 100-85 road win over Texas Lutheran.

Saturday afternoon in TLU's Memorial Gymnasium, Howard Payne registered just its third win of the season and scored 100 points for the first time this year.

Howard Payne made 66.7 percent of its shots in the second half and had four second-half three-pointers from Josh Weatherred, who finished the game 5-for-6 from beyond the arc.

HPU's Josh Weatherred (Amarillo) hit two three-point shots in the decisive 17-6 run that stretched the HPU lead from nine to 20. HPU led 84-64 with 8:11 to play in the game.

Howard Payne shot 62.3 percent from the floor for the entire contest and hit 53.3 percent of its total three-point attempts.

The 100 points scored by HPU are the most points allowed by TLU this season. TLU hit 53.6 percent of its total shots (30-for-56) but could do little to slow down Howard Payne.

Six players scored in double figures for the Yellow Jackets. Tom Hermann (Fort Worth) and Victor Hayes (Albuquerque ) each had a team-high 16. Sean Wheeler (San Angelo) and Weatherred each scored 15. Lee Scott (Snyder) and Kendrick Johnson (Houston) added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

TLU was led by Nate Walton's 24. Brandon Hughes collected 16 points. J.C. Herebia and Tyler Wanek added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Howard Payne plays at home on Monday at 5:00 p.m. versus Sul Ross State.
