BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets had a shot to tie the game with 5 seconds remaining, but it went in and out as they fall to the visiting Crusaders of Mary Hardin-Baylor 67-71 Saturday in the Brownwood Coliseum.
Howard Payne was out-rebounded 45-32 in the game by UMHB, which proved to be the difference.
The game remained close early on, before UMHB was able to build a slight lead. Poor shooting by the Jackets (36.7%) in the first allowed the Crusaders to lead 35-29 at the break.
The Jackets were able to take the lead with 12:13 to play on a lay-up by Kendrick Johnson (Houston) 45-44. There were 4 ties in the game from that point.
With 5 seconds remaining in the game Johnson's 3-point attempt to tie the game went in and out to give UMHB the 71-67 victory.
Howard Payne was led by Sean Wheeler (San Angelo) with 16 points. Kendrick Johnson had 14 and Lee Scott (Snyder) came off the bench to score 11.
UMHB had Kevin Guyden with a game-high 22 and Zane Johnston with 10.
Howard Payne will play at home versus Concordia University - Austin on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
