Balanced Scoring Leads To Jackets Win

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets had five players score in double-digits to post a 91-87 victory over the visiting Concordia University-Austin Tornados on Monday night.

Howard Payne out-rebounded Concordia 45-31 in the game. After shooting 0 of 8 from the 3-point line in the first half the Jackets shot 5 of 10 in the second.

The game remained close in the first 15 mintues with 5 lead changes. HPU was able to build as slight lead and go into the break with a 42-37 advantage.

In the second. CUA was able to tie it at 50-50 with 14:57 left. HPU then built a 9 point advantage at 6:06 left on a lay-up by Tom Hermann (Fort Worth) (78-69).

CUA fought back and was within 2 (89-87) with 7 seconds remaining. HPU's Josh Weatherred (Amarillo) hit both of his free-throws and secured the 91-87 victory.

HPU was led by Kendrick Johnson (Houston) with 18 points. Sean Wheeler (San Angelo)and Craig Blackmon (Houston) both had 14 points. Tom Hermann had 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Lee Scott (Snyder) had 10. Victor Hayes (Albuquerque) dished out 6 assists.

CUA had Michael Moore with a game-high 19 points. Roland Mitchell and Brad Walker each had 17. Michael Sherlin and Joel McDonald had 13 and 11 respectively.

The Yellow Jackets will travel to Abliene on Thursday to take on Hardin-Simmons University.
