ALPINE, Texas – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets used a 12-2 run to start the second half on their way to a 70-61 victory over the Sul Ross State Lobos at the Gallego Center on Saturday.
Howard Payne shot an amazing 63.2% from the field in the game including 62.5% from the 3-pt arc.
In the first half both teams traded leads back and forth with Sul Ross State taking a 30-28 halftime advantage. HPU out-rebounded Sul Ross 16 to 9 in the first half.
The Jackets come out of the half with a huge surge out-scoring the Lobos 12-2 in the opening minutes of the second. HPU extended their lead to as much as 15 in the second. The Jackets shot 66 % in the second on their way to the 70-61 victory.
Howard Payne was lead by Travis Dawson with a career high 20 points on 5 of 8 shooting, 5 of 6 from behind the arc. Tom Hermann added 17 points and 3 steals. Lee Scott had 14 second half points and Bryan Blalock had 12 points on 5 of 5 shooting.
Filiberto Torrez led Sul Ross State with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Jermaine Packer had 16 and Art Gonzales added 12 points.
Jackets improve to 4-2 overall, 2-1 in ASC action, while Sul Ross falls to 3-3, 2-1 in the ASC.
The Yellow Jackets will play next on Saturday at East Texas Baptist in Marshall.
