BELTON, Texas – The Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team used a home run to win game one, but the Howard Payne Lady Jackets held UMHB scoreless in game two as HPU split a doubleheader with Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday afternoon in Belton.
Howard Payne moves to 17-5 overall and 6-2 in the ASC. UMHB is 13-9 overall and 9-3 in American Southwest Conference play following the split.
UMHB took game one 3-0 behind Kacie Kripner's three-run homer. Lindsey Liles threw a complete-game, four-hitter for UMHB to raise her record to 6-5 on the year. She struck out two and walked two. Jill McLaughlin went the distance for HPU, scattering four hits and walking two to take the loss. She struck out one.
Game two turned into another pitcher's duel before HPU scored two runs in the top of the tenth inning and held on for a 2-0 win. Jenna Middleton and Daphne Kahlig locked up for nine innings of scoreless softball before the game went to the international tiebreaker in the top of the tenth. Lauren Bollich's fielder's choice scored the first run and another fielder's choice scored the second run. UMHB had a runner thrown out at home to end the game in the bottom of the tenth. UMHB out hit HPU 11-3. HPU's Middleton gave up 11 hits in 10 innings, striking out one and walking one.
