HPU Uses Buzzer-beater To Down LC

PINEVILLE, LA - Brock Woods drove the length of the court with 5.9 seconds remaining and hit a five-foot shot as time expired, lifting Howard Payne to a 71-70 American Southwest Conference win over Louisiana College Thursday night.

The win ended a four-game losing streak for Howard Payne and snapped LC's three-game winning streak. Both teams committed 15 turnovers and shot nearly identical as LC sot 44.3 percent and HPU shot 42.9 percent. Rebounding was a key factor though, as HPU grabbed 39 compared to LC's 29. Of those 39, 15 were on the offensive side, contributing to several easy second-chance shots.

The game was a see-saw battle throughout, but things really got interesting in the last :30 seconds of the contest. After two free throws by Lee Scott, Howard Payne led 69-65 with 17.7 seconds remaining. On the inbound, LC quickly got up court and Josh Johnson hit a three-point basket with12.2 seconds remaining, cutting the HPU lead to 69-68.

On the ensuing inbound pass, HPU's Daytona Burch was fouled, sending him to the free throw line. Burch missed the front end of a one-and-one and LC's Daniel Greenhouse grabbed the rebound and got the ball to Johnson, who was fouled with 5.9 seconds left. Johnson hit both free throws, giving LC a 70-69 lead with 5.9 seconds left.

Coming out of a HPU timeout, Woods inbounded the ball to Scott who quickly got it back to him, and he drove the floor and hit a one-handed, five-foot shot, as time expired.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 6-6 overall and 4-4 in ASC action. LC falls to 4-7 and 3-4 in the ASC.

Lee Scott was Howard Payne's leading scorer with 23 and 7 rebounds. Brock Woods chipped in 19. Tom Hermann had 11 points and 7 rebounds.
