BROWNWOOD, Texas – Howard Payne Yellow Jackets scored the final six points of the game and used a 27-rebound advantage to secure a 66-62 home victory over the Texas Lutheran Thursday night in the Brownwood Coliseum.
The American Southwest Conference's leading scorer, Tom Hermann, led the Yellow Jackets with 24 points and had a lay-up in the final minutes that gave HPU a two-point lead, at 64-62.
TLU led 62-60 with three minutes to play after Brad Howard hit a three-pointer. But Howard Payne took advantage of their inside game in the final minutes to secure extra chances on the offensive glass and convert free throws at the line.
The Yellow Jackets finished the game with 27 offensive rebounds, nearly as many as TLU's 29 total rebounds.
HPU did turn the ball over 29 times and was 0-for-14 from the three-point line. The Yellow Jackets did convert at the foul line, hitting 13 of 16 second-half free throws.
The Bulldogs were 10-of-22 from the free throw line and just 4-of-11 from the line in the second half.
Brad Howard led the TLU Bulldogs with 17 points. Nate Walton came off the Bulldog bench to score 15 for TLU. Hill finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, a block and four steals. Jonathan Hutton added nine points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Along with Tom Hermann's game high 24 points he grabbed 8 rebounds and 5 steals. Bryan Blalock added 11 points and 6 rebounds.
HPU improved to 7-7 overall and to 5-5 in the ASC West. TLU dropped to 1-12 overall and to 1-8 in the ASC West Division.
The Yellow Jackets will play Schreiner University at home on Saturday at 3:00 PM.
