BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets held the Schreiner University Mountaineers to just 33% shooting on their way to a 77-60 victory in the Brownwood Coliseum on Saturday.
The Jackets shot 56.4% from the field and 47.6% from behind the arc. Senior Lee Scott had a huge game with 22 points.
The game was back and forth at the start, but the Jackets were able to build a 43-30 halftime advantage.
In the second Howard Payne extended their lead to as much as 25, 62-37 with 8:46 to play on a jumper by Gary Thompson. The Jackets went on the post the 77-60 victory.
HPU point guard Brock Woods played a key role in the win with a career high 8 assists. Along with Lee Scott's game high 22 points was Bryan Blalock with 17 points on 8 of 11 shooting. Blalock also had a game high 7 rebounds. Gary Thompson and Tom Hermann had 13 and 11 respectively. Daytona Burch had 4 blocks.
Riley Battle led Schreiner with 17 points and Robert Blackshear added 12 off the bench.
The Yellow Jackets out-rebounded Schreiner 42 to 26 in the game.
The Jackets travel to Belton on Thursday to take on Mary Hardin-Baylor.
