Jackets Bit By The Lobos

ALPINE, Texas – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets were haunted by turnovers and fell to Sul Ross State 55-68 in American Southwest Conference action at the Gallego Center. 

HPU's Keith Perry scored the first 5 points in the game and the Jackets had an early lead. A 14-0 run by Sul Ross State midway through the first half opened up a 19-9 lead for the Lobos. A three-point play by HPU's Tom Hermann at the end of the half brought the score to 20-31 Sul Ross State. 

HPU shot 30% from the field and turned the ball over 11 times in the first half. Sul Ross only committed 4 turnovers in that half. 

The Jackets battled back in the second half and with a Tom Hermann 3-pointer with 13:10 to play the score was 37-42 Sul Ross State. The Lobo lead again grew to 13, 39-52 with 9:59 to play sparked by the hot hand of Roderick Gunter. 

Howard Payne was unable to get back in the game and fell 55-68. The Jackets only managed 30% shooting from the field and turned the ball over 20 times in the game. 

Sul Ross was led by Roderick Gunter with a game high 20 points. Henry Flores added 14 points and 7 rebounds for the Lobos. 

HPU was led by Tom Hermann with 15 points on 5 of 8 shooting. Keith Perry added 11 points. Bryan Blalock grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds. 

The Jackets fall to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in ASC action, while Sul Ross improves to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in ASC play. 

Howard Payne will play next at home on Saturday at 3:00 pm against LeTourneau University.
