Jackets Get First WIn Of The Year

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets get their first win of the season with a 73-54 win over the visiting Sul Ross State Lobos at the Brownwood Coliseum Saturday afternoon. 

Howard Payne held the Lobos to just 26% shooting from the field and outrebounded Sul Ross 49-39. The Jackets had 22 points in the paint to Sul Ross' 8. 

Hot shooting for the Lobos allowed them to open a 7 point lead (6-13) five minutes into the game. From that point HPU turned it on and outscored Sul Ross 26-4 to finish out the half. The Yellow Jackets then held a 32-17 halftime advantage. Sul Ross only shot 18% from the field in the first half. 

HPU pushed their lead to as much as 25 points in the second half spurred by 53% shooting from the field. The Jackets were able to hold the Lobos and secure the 73-54 victory. 

Sul Ross was led by Jimmy Martinez's game-high 27 points. Roderick Gunter and Andy Hulsey added 13 and 10 points respectively. Anthony Woods recorded 7 assists. 

Howard Payne was led by Brandon Irwin's career high 15 points on 5 of 9 shooting. Bryan Blalock added 12 points. Zane Smith played solid at the point dishing out a game-high 8 assists. Tom Hermann and D.J. McCulloch added 8 points each. Hermann also had 6 assists. 

Howard Payne improves to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in ASC action, while Sul Ross falls to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in ASC play. 

The Jackets play next on Thursday at home against Mississippi College at 7:30 pm.
