Howard Payne Nips The Lady Lobos

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The 19th ranked Howard Payne Lady Jackets out-rebounded visiting Sul Ross State 43-25 on their way to a 71-53 American Southwest Conference win on TexasBank Court Saturday afternoon. 

Howard Payne forced 25 Sul Ross turnovers and held them to just 38% shooting from the field. 

After the Sul Ross Lady Lobos held a 6 point lead (7-13) 8 minutes into the first half, Howard Payne went on to outscore Sul Ross 22-9 the remaining 12 minutes. Howard Payne held a 29-22 halftime advantage. 

Sul Ross started the second half on an 8-2 run to regain the lead 31-33 just three minutes in the second. It was all HPU from there as HPU regained and built their lead over the rest of the half.
Isela Garza led Sul Ross with 14 points followed by Angelique Benton with 11points. Casi Tribbett added four steals. 

Katy Sarem in her first game back from an ankle sprain scored a game-high 15 points on 5 of 9 shooting. Sarem also dished out 4 assists. Elaine Hobbs posted a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Stephanie Brewer and Tiffany Warner followed with 11 and 10 points respectively. 

The Lady Jackets improve to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in ASC action, while Sul Ross remains winless at 0-8, 0-6 in ASC play. 

Howard Payne will play again next Thursday at home versus Mississippi College at 5:30 pm.
