KERRVILLE, Texas – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets used a great team effort to down Schreiner University Saturday at the Eddington Center, 78-58.
The Jackets battled back and forth with Schreiner before they were able to secure a 25-19 lead with 7:04 left in the first. Howard Payne held a 40-32 halftime advantage. The Jackets forced 9 Schreiner turnovers while only committing 3 in the first half.
Lee Scott was the hot offensive hand for HPU scoring 13 points on 3 of 4 shooting from behind the arc in the first.
In the second, the Jackets extended their lead to 11, 54-43 with 14:58 left on a Tom Hermann fastbreak layup. Howard Payne built their lead to 20 posting the 78-58 win.
Lee Scott led the Jackets with a game high 19 points. He was 4 of 6 from the three-point line. Bryan Blalock had 12, 6 of 6 from the free-throw line. Tom Hermann and Deandray McDaniel had 10 each.
Schreiner was led by Ronnie Barney with 15 points. Mark Mahaffy and Riley Battle each finished with 11 points.
The Jackets finish the regular season 13-12 overall and 11-10 in ASC action. Schreiner finishes 5-20 and 5-16 in the ASC.
The Yellow Jackets will play next on Friday, February 29 in the first round of the American Southwest Conference Tournament in Belton, Texas at noon against Mississippi College.
