HPU Basketball Alumni Making His Mark On Nashville Star

BROWNWOOD, Texas – Former Howard Payne basketball standout Coffey Anderson is making his presence felt now on NBC's Nashville Star. The finals started with 12 contestants and Coffey is now down to the last six in the singing competition.

The 6'6” forward Coffey, a 2002 Howard Payne Alumnus, was a part of the Howard Payne basketball program from 1999-2002 seasons. He has scored 828 points in his career for an average of 9.5 points per game along with 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting 43 percent from the field, 29 percent from 3-point land and 80 percent from the free throw line. Anderson has also collected 81 assists, 63 steals and 37 blocks in his time at Howard Payne.

Before coming to HPU at Bangs High School, Anderson was named to the All-State, All-West Texas, All-West Texas Super Team and All-Area teams for two seasons along with being named District MVP for his junior and senior seasons. 

The Bangs, Texas native was selected among 45,000 individuals who auditioned for the show. Anderson previously made his through several rounds on FOX's “American Idol: Season Two” before being eliminated. Now making his home in Los Angeles, he has been pursuing a singing/songwriting career for several years. 

Coffey Anderson is one of six remaining contestants in the running to become the next “Nashville Star.” The NBC's summer show airs on Monday nights at 8 p.m. CST. “Nashville Star” had been broadcast on USA Network for the past five years and just made the transition to primetime NBC.
