HPU Comes Up Short Against UMHB

Tom Hermann finished the game with 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets lost the battle on the boards 49-34 and the game 65-74 to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Thursday night in the Brownwood Coliseum.

The Jackets started the game hot and led 10-2 just minutes into the game. HPU extended that lead to 11, 22-11 with 10:17 left in the half. UMHB from that point went on a run outscoring HPU 14-1 to take a 23-25 lead with 5:55 on the clock. UMHB held a 32-35 halftime advantage.

UMHB started the second half hot extending their lead to 38-48 with 15:34 left. The Jackets battled back and took a 59-57 lead with two Quentin Calloway free-throws. UMHB with their presence on the offensive glass was able to regain the lead and held on for the 65-74 win.

UMHB was lead by Jason Wagner and David Ray with 16 points each. Tilmon Gaddy followed with 11 points and 12 rebound, 5 offensive.

HPU was led Tom Hermann with a 16 point and 14 rebound performance. Keith Perry had 14 and Zane Smith had 12. Brandon Irwin had 11 points and 4 assists.

Howard Payne falls to 4-11 overall and 4-7 in ASC play, while UMHB improves to 8-6, 6-4 in ASC action.

The Jackets play next Thursday in Abilene against Hardin-Simmons in American Southwest Confernece action.
