TLU Holds Off Late HPU Run

Zane Smith had a career high 17 points and Tom Hermann grabbed his 500th career rebound at Texas Lutheran

SEGUIN, Texas – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets could not erase a 21-point second half deficit and fall 77-85 to Texas Lutheran University Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium. 

Game remained close early, but with 9 minutes left in the first Texas Lutheran went on a 12-0 run. TLU led 14-25 with 5 minutes left in the first half. TLU held a 23-37 halftime lead. 

The score difference remained the same halfway through the second half. After TLU extended their to as much as 21, HPU went on a run and cut the TLU lead to 7, 55-62 on a Keith Perry layup with 7:29 to play. 

The run was sparked by great play by Daytona Burch and Brit Campbell. That was as close as the Jackets would get and drop the game to TLU, 77-85. 

Poor free-throw shooting by the Jackets may have been the difference in the second half as HPU was 19 of 33 (57%) for the game. 

Brad Howard, Nate Walton, and Jonathan Hutton all led Texas Lutheran with 18 points each. Walton added 9 rebounds. 

The Jackets were led by Zane Smith with a career-high 17 points. Tom Hermann followed with 16, Keith Perry had 13. Hermann passed 500 career rebounds at HPU. Daytona Burch had 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. 

Howard Payne falls to 4-11 overall, 4-15 in ASC play, while Texas Lutheran improves to 5-13, 5-10 in ASC action. 

Howard Payne will play at home next Thursday against Schreiner at 7:30 pm.
