Jackets Get Close Win Over HSU

Brandon Irwin comes up with a great defensive play at the end to secure win for the Jackets

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets held off a late Hardin-Simmons run to win 69-68 in the Brownwood Coliseum Thursday night.

Both teams traded leads throughout the first half. The Jackets used a 7-0 run in the last 4 minutes of the half to gain a 30-24 halftime advantage.

The Jackets led by as much as 11 points in the second half, 50-39 on a Quentin Calloway free-throw with 9:45 to play. Hardin-Simmons battled back to within 1,65-64 with 1:57 to play. A HSU foul sent Bryan Blalock to the free-throw line with 1:45 left. Blalock hit both, 67-64 HPU.

Both teams traded buckets and then a HSU layup with 38 seconds remaining brought HSU to within 1 again, 69-68. A Tom Hermann turnover with 21 seconds left gave HSU a chance to win or tie. Freshman Brandon came up with a great defensive play at the buzzer blocking the Hardin-Simmons last second shot attempt.

HSU was led by Carlos Singer with 19 points followed closely by Steven Wesley with 18. Rian Stubbs grabbed 9 rebounds.

Bryan Blalock had a great game off the bench for the Jackets with 18 points. Tom Hermann had 15 and Quentin Calloway added 10 off the bench as well.

The Jackets improve to 6-16 overall and 6-1 in ASC play, while HSU falls to 7-15, 6-12 in ASC action.

The Jackets finished out the regular season home game on Saturday at 3:00 pm against McMurry.
