HPU Defense Too Much For Concordia

AUSTIN, Texas – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets out-rebound Concordia University 50-30 and hold them to just 39% shooting to post a 89-68 win at the Concordia Fieldhouse Thursday evening. 

Concordia started the game leading 15-6 but the Jackets battled back. HPU held a 29-23 lead on a Keith Perry three-pointer with 5:45 left in the half. The run continued for the Jackets and HPU held a 45-30 halftime lead. 

The Jackets shot 50% from the field and 100% (12 of 12) from the free-throw line in the first half. Concordia only managed 39% from the field and just 18% (2 of 11) from the line in the first half. 

The Jackets maintained the 15-point lead most of the second half. Concordia cut the HPU lead to 11-points twice but the Jackets extended it to 20 points with 2 minutes remaining. Howard Payne held on for the 89-68 win. 

Howard Payne out-rebounded Concordia 50-30 in the game. Howard Payne shot 51% from the field and 70% from the free-throw line. 

Concordia was led by Joel McDonald with 18 followed by Brad Walker with 14 points. Concordia did record 9 blocks in the game. 

Tom Hermann led the Jackets with a game-high 23 points with 9 rebounds. Bryan Blalock added 19 points and 10 rebounds. Keith Perry had 11 and Daytona Burch and Brandon Irwin had 10 points each. Burch also added 9 rebounds. 

The Jackets improve to 7-17 overall and 7-13 in ASC play, while Concordia falls to 9-15, 8-12 in the ASC.
The Jackets will finish out their regular season at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
