Jackets Finish Season At UMHB

BELTON, Texas – The Howard Payne Yellow Jacket basketball team finished out the season with a 69-73 loss to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday at the Mayborn Center. 

Both teams took time in the lead in the first half with neither gaining more than a 5 point advantage. Mary Hardin Baylor led at the half 30-33. 

The second half was a battle with UMHB holding the lead for the first eleven minutes. A Keith Perry layup with 8:53 left gave the Jackets a 1-point lead 51-50. Back to back UMHB three-pointers gave them back a 5-point lead with 8 minutes left. 

The Jackets were down 3, 69-71 with 13 second left, but UMHB hit 1 of 2 free-throws. The HPU last shot attempt was no good and UMHB held on to win 69-73. 

Both teams shot 40% from the field. The difference in the game was UMHB shooting 45% from the three-point line and out-rebounding HPU 41-35. 

UMHB was led by Jason Wagner with 23 points followed by David Ray with 17. Ray also had a game-high 14 rebounds. Elmo Williams had 13 points. 

There was balanced scoring for the Jackets with 5 in double-digits. Keith Perry, Tom Hermann, and Zane Smith each finished with 13 points. Brandon Irwin and Bryan Blalock added 11 points each. Hermann had 5 steals and Blalock had 5 assists. 

The Jackets finish the season at 7-18, 7-14 in ASC and UMHB finished 18-8, 16-5 in ASC play.
