Jockers Buzzer Beater Lifts HPU Past MC

Hope Hohertz drove the floor in 3.9 seconds to find Sarah Jockers for the win

ABILENE, Texas – The Howard Payne Lady Jackets get a layup at the buzzer by Sarah Jockers to defeat Mississippi College 63-62 in the first round of the 2009 American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament. Howard Payne will play McMurry University on Saturday at 4:00 pm in the second round. 

In a game between two of the top defensive teams in the ASC, Howard Payne came out shooting great and held an 18-12 lead with 14:14 on the clock. Mississippi College took a 1-point lead 27-28 with 5 minutes to play in the first half. Both raised their defensive intensity and neither team scored a field goal the remainder of the half. With two free-throws Mississippi College led 27-30 at the half. 

HPU shot 48% from the field to MC's 44% and the lady Jackets were 4 of 8 from behind the arc in the half. 

HPU started the second strong and with 14:35 left, Katy Sarem hit two free-throws to give HPU a 40-37 lead. MC rallied back to take an 8-point lead, 45-53, on a three-pointer with 8:51 left. HPU chipped away at the lead and cut it to one-point, 56-57, on a Hope Hohertz free-throw with 3:16 left. 

MC scored five straight to lead 56-62 with 1:32 remianing. Katy Sarem buries a three with 1:22 on the clock. A Hope Hohertz steal and free-throws brought HPU to within one, 61-62 with :57 seconds left. Hohertz comes up with another steal and the Lady Jackets have the ball with :31 seconds. 

After a HPU timeout, MC's Anna Paterson steals the inbound pass and Katy Sarem is forced to foul. Casie Hilton misses her free-throw, MC's only free-throw miss of the game. Hope Hohertz dribbles the length of the floor in 3.9 seconds and finds Sarah Jockers for the game winning layup at the buzzer. 

MC was led by Anna Patterson with 15 points. Rosemary Green finished with 13 and Anesia McBride had 12. McBride also grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds. Casie Hilton had 8 assists. 

Hope Hohertz led the Lady Jackets with a game-high 17 points and was 3 of 3 from the three-point line. She also grabbed 6 rebounds to pass 500 in her career. Katy Sarem followed with 16 points and Elaine Hobbs and Mionca Hall each had 12. 

Lady Jackets improve to 21-5 overall and will play McMurry University at 4:00 pm on Saturday. Mississippi College season ends at 22-4 overall.
