Jackets Get 5th Win Of The Season

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets get a double-double from senior Tom Hermann and post a 74-61 win over the Mountaineers of Schreiner University Thursday in the Brownwood Coliseum.

After the Jackets jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the game both teams battled back and forth over the next 12 minutes. With 5:24 left in the first half and the Jackets leading 24-22, HPU made their run. The Jackets outscored Schreiner 18-3 to close out the half and held a 42-25 halftime advantage. The run was sparked by a dunk by Brandon Irwin, Zane Smith on the assist.

The Jackets held strong in the second half and held off a late Schreiner run to gain the 74-61 victory. A difference in the game was the free-throw attempts with Howard Payne shooting 31 to Schreiner's 12 attempts.

Schreiner was led by Chris Jones-Conyers with 14 points. Riley Battle had 13 and Ralph Turner followed with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Tom Hermann led all scorers with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Brandon Irwin added 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. Keith Perry added 12 and Daytona Burch blocked 4 shots. Bryan Blalock blocked 3 shots and grabbed 9 rebounds off the bench.

The Jackets improves to 5-15 overall and 5-11 in ASC, while Schreiner falls to 6-14, 6-10 in ASC play.

Howard Payne plays next at home versus Texas Lutheran on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
