TLU Gets HPU For Second Time This Season

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets were out-rebounded 46-36 and fell to Texas Lutheran University in the Brownwood Coliseum Saturday afternoon. 

The Yellow Jackets just managed 37% shooting from the field, but did force 23 Texas Lutheran turnovers. 

Scoring 22 points in the paint in the first half, Texas Lutheran built a 20-point lead before going into the halftime break leading, 31-49. 

The Jacket chipped away at the Texas Lutheran lead in the second and got to within 5 with 3:29 to play. A Jason Brister jumper brought HPU within 5, 60-65. That was as close as the Jackets could get and TLU secures the 64-72 win. 

Texas Lutheran was led by Nate Walton and Brad Howard with 11 points each. Michael Flores followed with 10. 

Brandon Irwin led the Jackets with 14 points. Zane Smith added 11 and Tom Hermann finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. 

HPU falls to 5-16, 5-12 in ASC action, while TLU improves to 6-14, 6-11 in ASC play. 

Howard Payne plays at home next on Thursday against ASC rival Hardin-Simmons at 7:30 pm.
