Jackets Open 2009 Season

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne Yellow Jacket tennis team opened their 2009 season on the road this weekend with matches against Austin College, Oklahoma Baptist, and the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith.

Howard Payne returns all three all-conference players from last season's team- Chris Sutton, Ross Sidman, and Nate Alger. The Jackets, a team that was young and talented last season, looks forward to having the experience they need to make a push for the ASC West Division title.

"I was pleased we were able to compete well against them," said Sally Brown head tennis coach. "This was good experience for us and should help us down the road as we prepare for Conference play. I was very pleased with the way both teams competed. 

The Jackets went 2-1 over the weekend with a 8-1 win over Austin College and losses to Oklahoma Baptist (0-9) and the University of Arkansas - Ft. Smith (3-6).

Coach Brown added, "I traveled 9 men and everyone of them had a win at some point throughout the weekend. They all came prepared to play and played with great intensity. This is a great group of young men."

The Lady Jackets will play at home this week on Thursday against the College of the Southwest at the Nabers Tennis Center.
