HPU Gets Two Wins Over Southwestern

Kate McLaughlin had 3 hits and 4 RBI in the double-header with Southwestern

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne Lady Jacket softball team defeated Southwestern University 6-2 and 4-3 in a non-conference double-header at Lady Jacket Field Sunday afternoon.

Howard Payne used two-run 5th and 6th innings to break a 2-2 tie and down Southwestern 6-2 in game one of the double-header. Southwestern's only 2 runs came off a two-run homerun by Kaitlyn Pavlicek. 

Jenna Middleton got the win for HPU throwing seven innings and giving up two runs on four hits. Middleton struckout nine. Lyndsy Maus got the loss for Southwestern.

In game two, Howard Payne led 3-1 going into the 6th inning. Southwestern got runs in the top of the 6th and 7th to tie the game at 3-3. In the bottom of the 7th, Mallory Wood grounded out to short. Kate McLaughlin singled to right field and then stole second. Ashley Silva was walked. Rebecca McDaniel doubled to right center scoring McLaughlin to win the game 4-3.

Jenna Middleton got the win again pitching two innings of relief. McLaughlin started the game and Melissa Hall also saw action. Kaitlyn Pavlicek got the loss for Southwestern.

The Lady Jackets improve to 12-2 overall and Southwestern falls to 5-10 on the year.

Howard Payne plays next Friday against Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton.
