Lady Jackets Get 2 Wins From UMHB

Jenna Middleton is now 7-0 on the year

BELTON, Texas – The Howard Payne Lady Jacket softball got doubleheader wins over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Friday afternoon. HPU won game one 6-0 and 4-3 in game two.

Howard Payne improves to 14-2 overall and 2-0 in the ASC with the two victories. UMHB is now 7-7 overall and 0-2 in American Southwest Conference play on the season.

HPU took a 2-0 lead in the third inning and put the game out of reach with three more in the seventh in a 6-0 game one victory.

Ashley Silva singled home two runs in the top of the third to make it 2-0 Yellow Jackets. HPU added a run on an error in the top of the fifth inning to make it 3-0. UMHB loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning, but could not push a run across. HPU then added three more runs on Silva's two-run double and a bases-loaded walk to Lauren Vesley in the top of the seventh to put the game away.

Jenna Middleton improved to 6-0 with the win for HPU. Kelsey Greeson took the loss for UMHB to drop to 3-4 on the season. Greeson scattered three hits and allowed just two earned runs in six innings. Lindsey Gordon had two of UMHB's five hits in the game. Silva was 2-4 with four RBI for the Lady Jackets in the victory.

UMHB then battled back from early deficit before HPU pushed across the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning to win 4-3 in game two.

The Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 first-inning lead on Rebecca McDaniel's RBI single and a bases-loaded hit batter. UMHB cut it to 2-1 on fielder's choice RBI in the bottom of the second and tied the game on a single in the bottom of the third.

McDaniel's sacrifice fly gave HPU a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth, but UMHB singled home a run to tie the game at three in the bottom of the frame.

HPU took a 4-3 lead when Kristi Pinkerton drove in a run and almost another, but Mary Hardin-Baylor threw out pinch-runner Sidnee Martinez at the plate to keep UMHB within a run. UMHB would put runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh, but could not score.

Middleton picked up the win in relief to raise her record to 7-0. Mandy Staton took the loss for the UMHB to fall to 3-2 on the season. Hurst was 3-4 for UMHB with two RBI. Kate McLaughlin had two of HPU's five hits in the game.

The two teams will close out the series with a noon doubleheader tomorrow at Dee Dillon Field.
