HPU Takes Two From TLU

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne Lady Jacket softball team posted two wins over Texas Lutheran University, 11-3 and 7-6 in American Southwest Conference action at Lady Jacket Field Friday afternoon.

After the HPU defense gave up three first innings runs, the Lady Jackets posted three of their own in the bottom of the inning. HPU held Texas Lutheran scoreless the rest of the game, while scoring one run in the 5th and seven runs in the 6th to run rule TLU 11-3.

Jenna Middleton got the win for HPU to improve to 12-0 on the year. Middleton struckout five an did not walk a single batter. Lauren Bollich and Mallory Wood each had two hits and Kristi Pinkerton added 3 RBI.

Game two on the day was much closer with Howard Payne winning with a walkoff RBI single by Rebecca McDaniel scoring Kate McLaughlin for the 7-6 win. Each team scored two runs in the openning frame. HPU held TLU scoreless till the 6th when they added 4 runs to tie the game at 6-6. McLaughlin doubled to start the 7th and was pushed to 3rd by an Ashli Silva sac bunt. McDaniel's RBI single won the game for the Lady Jackets.

Melissa Hall got the win for HPU and improved to 8-2 on the season. McLaughlin led HPU with three hits and three RBI. Bollich in game two of the double header broke the HPU record for stolen bases in a season with 28.

Howard Payne improves to 23-5 overall and 11-3 in ASC action, while TLU falls to 9-19, 4-10 ASC play. The two teams finish out the series tommorrow with another double header.
