Softball Sweeps TLU

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne Lady Jacket softball team completed the four-game sweep of Texas Lutheran University with 6-0 and 15-7 wins Saturday afternoon.

In game one, Jenna Middleton pitched a three-hitter and struckout seven in the complete game win. The Lady Jackets scored in the 2nd 3rd and 4th innings in the 6-0 victory. Rebecca McDaniel had two hits and Mallory Wood had 3 RBI.

Game two was much more eventfull with Howard Payne holding a 5-2 advantage at the end of 2nd inning. Texas Lutheran rallied back in the top of the 5th with five runs to take a 5-7 lead. HPU added two runs in the bottom of the inning on to tie it at 7-7. The runs came on a two-run homerun by Lauren Bollich, the first of her career. After holding TLU in the top of the 6th, Howard Payne exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the 6th to run rule TLU 15-7.

Middleton picked up the win in relief to improve to 14-0 on the year. Kate McLaughlin and Rebecca McDaniel combined for 9 RBI in the game, 5 and 4 respectively. Howard Payne also broke the school record for stolen bases in a season with 86.

Howard Payne improves to 25-5 overall and 13-3 in ASC play, while TLU falls to 9-21 overall and 4-12 in ASC action.

HPU will travel to Hardin-Simmons next weekend for a four-game series.
