HPU Splits With HSU

ABILENE, Texas - The Howard Payne softball team split games 1-5 and 4-1 with Hardin-Simmons University in American Southwest Conference action Friday afternoon.

In game one Hardin-Simmons scored first with three runs in the bottom of the third. The next inning HPU got their only run of the game when Rebecca McDaniel scored on a passed ball after the HSU pitcher had walked the basses loaded. HSU added two more runs in the fifth to win 1-5.

Jenna Middleton pick up her first loss on the year for HPU and now is 14-1. The Lady Jackets were out hit 4-8 and neither team had an error in the game.

Game two went in Howard Payne's favor as the Lady Jackets used a three-run top of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie and gain the 4-1 win. HPU's first run came in the openning inning when McDaniel singled to right field to score Lauren Bollich. HPU got their three runs in the seventh on RBI singles by Bollich, Kate McLaughlin, and Ashley Silva.

Kate McLaughlin got the complete game win for Howard Payne allowing one run on eight hits, she also struckout six. Bollich, McLaughlin, and Kellye Wheeler recorded two hits each in the game.

HPU stands at 26-6 overall and 14-4 ASC West play and HSU is 25-9,16-2 ASC West.

Both teams will play a double header on Saturday to complete the series.
