ASC Volleyball Teams To Ralley for Dig Pink at Cross Division Tournaments

RICHARDSON, Texas –– All 13 American Southwest Conference volleyball teams have committed to come together during cross division tournaments in October to help raise the awareness of breast cancer through the Dig Pink campaign created by the Side-Out Foundation.

The ASC schedule features annual two-day cross-divisional tournaments where members of the East and West Division take on each other at different sites. This year, tourneys will be held on October 2-3 in Marshall, Texas (East Texas Baptist University), and Tyler, Texas (University of Texas at Tyler), and on October 16-17 in Alpine, Texas (Sul Ross State University), and Abilene, Texas (Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University).

During each match at all tournaments, every player will be wearing a pink accessory incorporated into their uniform. In addition, all coaches, team managers, athletics trainers, referees and table staff members will be wearing a pink ribbon. The conference is also providing a Dig Pink prize pack at each site, which will include a pink ribbon backpack/cooler, restaurant gift certificate, pink chocolate candy and a four-pack of tickets to the 2009 ASC Volleyball Championship Tournament. The prize packs will be raffled off at the completion of each tournament. Tickets for the gift pack can be acquired with a Dig Pink donation.

“As a conference, it is important for us to come together to support something bigger than volleyball that effects us all as women,” Texas Lutheran head coach and ASC volleyball coaches chair, Tiffany Davis said. “We are honored to show our support for Dig Pink during our crossover weekends.”

All of the funds raised through gift pack drawing tickets and donations will be presented on behalf of the American Southwest Conference volleyball teams to The Side-Out Foundation.

“The ASC is proud to join the Dig Pink effort among NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA conferences and institutions,” ASC Commissioner Amy Carlton said. “Our conference-wide Dig Pink effort during the two October Cross Division match weekends will not only raise funds for breast cancer research, but will help raise awareness about diagnosis, treatment and caring for persons affected by breast cancer.”

The Side-Out Foundation is a non-profit, charitable organization formed in 2004 that has provided over $700,000 toward breast cancer research. Its name underscores the purpose of the organization, to regain control over the opponent. Likewise in the war against breast cancer, the foundation hopes to enable women and men affected with the disease and regain control of their lives and live it to the fullest.
