Jackets Secure Playoff Spot With Win Over Schreiner

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University men's soccer team locked up their spot in the American Southwest Conference tournament for the second year in a row Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 win over Schreiner University at Citizens National Bank Soccer Field.

Schreiner ended the Jackets season in 2009 beating HPU in the first round of the ASC Tournament. Coming into the game, HPU had to win or tie in order to qualify for the ASC tournament. And with their whole 2010 season in the balance, the Yellow Jackets responded.

After a slow start to the game for both teams, HPU would get the first score on a quick counter attack in the 21st minute. Defender, TJ Mayfield split the defense all the way to midfield, and at the last second dumped the ball off to Luis Tamez. He took the ball and did the rest catching Schreiner keeper Matt Johnson on his heels for the early 1-0 lead.

Just 9 minutes later, Tamez would score again in the 30th minute after beating three defenders inside the box with a shot over the Schreiner keeper for the 2-0 lead. It was Tamez's ninth goal of the season.

Schreiner would slice it to 2-1 HPU in the 82nd minute when Philip Anderson headed a ball back to Derek Brosky in the box.

Three minutes after the Mountaineers climbed back into the game, HPU would finish them off when Chris Thompson took a ball all the way down left side and finish a goal just underneath the GK's reach to make the final score 3-1.

Senior Jacket goalie, Malcolm Framjee made four saves in the game, allowing one goal. HPU dominated corner kicks with 10, SU 1. Fouls ended HPU 4, SU 8.

HPU finishes the regular season 12-4-1 overall and 9-4-0 in the ASC action. Schreiner ends their regular season at 10-5-4 overall and 7-3-3 in conference play.

The Jackets next game is Friday, Nov. 5 in Tyler, Texas at the 2010 ASC Championship Tournament. More details to come early next week.
