Lady Jackets Secure ASC Tournament Appearance

HPU women's soccer secures an ASC appearance

BROWNWOOD, Texas- The Howard Payne University women's soccer team secured their first ever American Southwest Conference Tournament appearance with a 2-0 win over Texas Lutheran Friday afternoon.

The HPU defense was dominant not allowing a single shot on goal from TLU. The Lady Jackets had 12 shots on goal on 25 shot attempts to the Bulldogs 4 total shot attempts.

HPU got started quickly taking the early 1-0 lead when Shannon Costello converted a penalty in the 11th minute, after TLU recorded a foul in the top right portion of the box for tripping.

Following the first goal, the HPU women would have many chances to double their lead, but TLU Goalie Andrea Camacho would make 10 fine saves throughout the game to keep the game close.

HPU would finally break through in the 83rd minute when Costello lifted a pass over many defenders that found Lindsey Reed on the back post to score her first collegiate goal and ice the game at 2-0 in favor of HPU.

HPU had 5 corner kicks, TLU 2. Fouls ended HPU 12, TLU 7.

The HPU women are now 9-4-3 overall and 7-3-2 in the ASC. TLU is moves to 7-10 overall and 5-7 in the ASC.

The next game will be the regular season finale, as the Lady Jackets will face Schreiner University at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30 at Citizens National Bank Soccer Field in Brownwood.
