Jackets Lose to the Roos

SHERMAN, Texas - The Howard Payne University men's basketball team falls short and lose 71-78 to the Austin College Kangaroos to end non-conference play Tuesday night.

With 6:15 left in the first half, the score was 30-30 after Jackets Center,Kanyon Payne made a layup. Following that, the Jackets had three turnovers in their next four possessions to help fuel an 11-3 run by the Roos, making the score 41-33.

From there the Jackets were never able to come back as Austin College defended their lead. HPU made many attempts get back into the game, and were able to pull within two and three points on a couple occasions.

HPU would make it a one point game with only a minute left, but again the Roos would nail 6 of 8 free throws to ice the game in the end.

Both shot the ball over 60 percent in the first half. In the second half they leveled out as HPU shot 36 percent and the Kangaroos shot 29 percent.

Three Jackets had double digits. Payne led with 15 points, Joshua Dada had 14 and Brandon Irwin ended with 13.

For the Roos, Scott Straley had a strong game finishing with 21 points and seven rebounds.

Rebounding was almost even between the two teams. The Jackets had 34, Roos 35.

The Jackets go to 1-3 overall on the year, while Austin College moves to 2-2.

American Southwest Conference play tips off for the Jackets next as they go on the road to Richardson to take on the University of Texas at Dallas at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27.
