ABILENE, Texas – The Howard Payne Lady Jacket soccer team recorded their fourth consecutive shutout with a 1-0 win over Mississippi College in the first round of the 2010 American Southwest Conference Tournament Friday afternoon.

The Lady Jackets scored on a Leslie Jones header in the 21st minute. The assist was from a Shannon Costello corner kick.

The Howard Payne defense was able to hold off the push by Mississippi College and post the 1-0 victory. HPU fended off 18 shots by MC, eight on goal. The Lady Jackets had just six shots, four on goal.

“We got a shutout against a very, very good Mississippi College team,” said HPU head coach Sam McCutchen. “We're honored to advance, but the idea is for us to stay focused for one more day.”

Adrienne Walker picked up the win for HPU recording eight saves. MC keeper Bethany Roberson recorded the loss with three saves.

Howard Payne now stands at 11-4-3 overall and MC's season ends at 12-5-4 overall.

HPU will face tournament host Hardin-Simmons on Saturday at 11:00 am in the second round.
