Jones Last Minute Goal Lifts HPU Past Mississippi

CLINTON, Miss - Leslie Jones' golden goal with less than a minute to play gave Howard Payne University a 2-1 victory over Mississippi College Thursday afternoon in American Southwest Conference women's soccer action.

Leslie Jones got two unassisted goals in the game the first coming in the 26th minute to give Howard Payne the 1-0 lead.

Mississippi College tied the game at 1-1 just nine minutes into the second period on a shot that deflected off the crossbar and in.

With just 40 seconds left in regulation, Jones was able to get around the MC defense and netted a shot one on one with the goal keeper.

Adrienne Walker got the win for Howard Payne recording 13 saves in 90 minutes of action. Bethany Roberson and Elizabeth Beatty each played a period for MC and each giving up one goal.

Howard Payne improves to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in coference play, while MC falls to 6-5 overall and 3-3 in ASC action.

The Lady Jackets will be in Pineville, LA on Saturday taking on Louisiana College in another ASC match.
