Jackets Defeat Austin College 89-80

IRVING, Texas - Howard Payne University gets 36 points from Brandon Irwin in a 89-80 win over Austin College on day one of the University of Dallas Tipoff Classic.

The Jackets shot 43% from behind the arc in the game and were able to hit 76% of their free-throws. Austin College struggled from the line only shooting 59%. The Jackets nearly had double the amount of free-throw attempts than AC in the game.

Howard Payne controlled most of the first half never trailing. Austin College was able to tie the game a couple of times with the Jackets leading by 14 points twice in the opening half.

With the Jackets holding a 44-35 halftime advantage, Austin College slowly chipped away and final took a one point lead, 61-60, with 9:31 to play in the game.

The Jackets regained the lead and extended it to 10 points on Brandon Irwin free-throws with 2:00 left to play. Irwin finished with a game high 36 points on 8 of 17 shooting, he was 16 of 20 from the free-throw line.

Irwin added nine rebounds to his 36 points. Brandon Gould finished with 15 points and Joshua Dada had 12 points along with eight rebounds.

Austin College was led by Josh Saunders with 19 points and followed by Antoine Thompson with 15.

Howard Payne will take on tournament host University of Dallas on Saturday.
