Jackets Get Win Over UT-Tyler

BROWNWOOD, Texas – Gabriel Garza Jr. scored 12 points off the bench leading Howard Payne University to a 67-60 victory over the University of Texas at Tyler Saturday evening.

Gabriel Garza Jr had eight rebounds and three blocks to go along with his 12 points off the bench for the Yellow Jackets. Howard Payne earned some of their advantage over UT-Tyler going to the free-throw line 19 more times than the Patriots.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play, while UT-Tyler falls to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in conference.

Howard Payne led most of the game but buckled down on defense in the closing minutes to secure the 67-60 win. UT-Tyler tied the game up at 50-50 with 7:28 to play. HPU then went on a 6-0 run and would never look back, holding UT-Tyler to just 10 points over the remaining seven minutes.

Joshua Dada was the only other Jacket in double digits in scoring with 11. Brandon Irwin and Bryan Adams each had eight points.

Brandon Levine had a game high 20 points for UT-Tyler followed by Larry Carpenter with 11.

Howard Payne will play at home versus LeTourneau University on Monday at 7:30 pm.
