Jackets Nip Sul Ross State In Closing Seconds

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets score five unanswered points in the final 19 seconds to defeat Sul Ross State University 77-73 Saturday afternoon in the Brownwood Coliseum.

Down 73-72 with 19 seconds left in the game, Quentin Calloway got a steal and laid it in to give HPU a one point lead. As Sul Ross brought the ball across midcourt, Calloway got another steal and was fouled. He made both giving the Jackets a 76-73 lead with ten seconds remaining. A missed shot by Sul Ross and another Jacket free-throw by Brandon Gould would secure the 77-73 win for the Yellow Jackets.

Howard Payne improves to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in conference. Sul Ross State falls to 3-6 overall and 3-4 in ASC play.

The Jackets held a 30-29 halftime advantage with 46% shooting in the opening half. Sul Ross heated up shooting 60% in the second half. Sul Ross would hold a six point lead five minutes into the second half.

Brandon Irwin led all scorers with 18 points. Gabriel Garza Jr and Travis Taillet each finished with 12. Taillet was 3 of 4 from behind the arc. Joshua Dada had 11 and Brandon Gould added nine points, three assists and three steals.

Bralyn Thomas and Colton Thompson each had 17 for Sul Ross. Eric Garcia added 10 points and eight rebounds.

After the Christmas holiday, the Yellow Jackets will travel to Sul Ross State in Alpine for a New Year's Eve game at 3:00 pm.
