ALPINE, Texas - The Howard Payne University men's basketball team only shot 39% from the field and fell 60-54 to Sul Ross State University in conference action Saturday afternoon.

Down 34-32 at the half, the Yellow Jackets were able to gain an early second half lead. Sul Ross State would regain the lead and hold on for the win. 39% shooting for the Jackets to 44% for Sul Ross State was the difference in the game. Sul Ross also outrebounded HPU 40-30 on the night.

Howard Payne falls to 6-5 overall and 4-4 in conference. Sul Ross improves to 4-7 overall and 4-4 in conference.

Howard Payne was led by Brandon Irwin with a game high 19 points. Ja'Kalan Gayden scored 10 points with a team high seven rebounds.

Juston Copeland and Colton Thompson led Sul Ross with 13 and 12 points respectively. Eric Garcia grabbed a game high nine rebounds.

The Jackets will be on the road on Jan. 5th at East Texas Baptist and Jan. 7th at Centenary College.
